Why Running Can Help You Think Better

Have you ever read the book, “Born To Run”?  If you weren’t a runner before reading the book, you would be after.  It reads like a fiction novel and is one of my favorite books.

It’s about one journalist’s journey to find the mystical “Caballo Blanco” deep in the canyons of Mexico.  I won’t spoil the story, but it’s a great read and will motivate you to want to run, be outdoors and just be free,

Most people run with their iPod or MP3 player these days.  It’s a great way to relax and listen to music or even an audio book or podcast.  If you like to listen to music while you are running, I suggest you try something else the next time you run.

Run with only your own thoughts.

Running long distances outdoors with only your thoughts can, and will, lead to deep interpersonal thinking and insights.  Something magical happens when you run alone for long distances, you start an inner dialog with yourself which can lead to amazing breakthroughs for yourself.

I’ve come up with some of my best ideas and found some of my deepest insights while running long distances.  If you are trying to work through a personal situation, running can be your own form of therapy, a chance to think things through, discover alternatives, and connect the dots in ways you would not have been able to do during the normal course of your day.

Their are too many distractions in our everyday lives, long distance running is one of the only times when you can be alone with your thoughts and nothing else.  No phone calls, internet or other interruptions, just you and your amazing thoughts.

I’ve been sidelined with an ankle injury for the past few weeks, thanks to my sports physio, I’ll be back on the road soon, and I can’t wait.

So my suggestion to you for this weekend is to go out and buy the book, get yourself some minimalist shoes and go for a run outdoors, you’ll be amazed with the wonderful things your mind has waiting for you to discover.
